The Play to Learn Method
At Play to Learn Therapy, we believe that meaningful progress happens where science and play meet. Our work is grounded in the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) — a research-based field founded on the work of B.F. Skinner, who studied how learning and behavior are shaped by the environment. His discoveries about reinforcement — that behaviors followed by positive outcomes are more likely to occur again — continue to guide the strategies we use today.
While our foundation is deeply scientific and data-driven, our approach is anything but rigid. We understand that children learn best when they’re engaged, having fun, and feeling connected. That’s why our sessions blend structured teaching with natural, play-based learning opportunities — turning everyday moments into chances to grow communication, social, and independence skills.
Our therapists use evidence-based interventions such as Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Natural Environment Teaching (NET) to build skills step by step, while also incorporating games, movement, and creativity to keep learning meaningful and enjoyable. During every session, we collect and analyze data to ensure progress is measurable, and your child’s Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) reviews graphs and trends to fine-tune goals and interventions as needed.
At Play to Learn, therapy is both an art and a science — guided by research, fueled by play, and centered around your child’s joy and growth
How We Use Science & Play in Every Session
Our interventions are built on decades of behavioral science and supported by peer-reviewed research in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) — proven to help children build communication, independence, and social confidence.
We believe that children learn best when they’re having fun — which is why our sessions combine structured teaching with natural play-based interactions. Through games, movement, and creative activities, we bring each skill to life, helping your child stay motivated and confident while learning.
Because growth extends beyond behavior, our team also works closely with Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Occupational Therapists (OTs) to create a collaborative and holistic treatment plan. Together, we target all areas of development — communication, social skills, sensory regulation, fine motor coordination, and emotional flexibility — ensuring that progress is well-rounded and lasting.
A typical session may include:
Warm-Up & Rapport Building: Using play or sensory activities to create comfort, motivation, and engagement.
Skill Acquisition Trials: Applying structured teaching (DTT) to break complex skills into smaller, achievable steps, each reinforced and measured for mastery.
Natural Environment Teaching (NET): Embedding learning into everyday play, routines, and conversations to promote generalization across real-life settings.
Behavioral & Collaborative Interventions: Teaching replacement behaviors, communication, and coping skills — often in partnership with SLPs or OTs to align goals across disciplines.
Throughout every session, our therapists collect detailed data on your child’s progress — recording responses, independence, and behavior trends. The BCBA reviews and graphs this data regularly to analyze progress, identify patterns, and make adjustments to ensure every intervention remains evidence-based, effective, and responsive to your child’s needs.
At Play to Learn, science guides our practice — but play, collaboration, and compassion bring that science to life.
